“The Call”

The dreams of tall, wide antlers never ends for me. Even when the season comes to an end and I will not have an opportunity to grab my bow and climb in a stand for about 9 months the thoughts of whitetails are always there. They do however take a back seat this time of year to the wild turkey. I absolutely love turkey hunting and this year it looks like I will have the opportunity to hunt these great birds in three different states. One of the things I love about turkey hunting is the chance to commnuicate with the bird. I spends hours and hours practicing my calling skills so that when the time comes to work that big tom in he is convinced I am what he is looking for.

Life Tip: We sang a song in church last week that had these words, "I called, You answered". I have to admit my first thought went right to turkeys. However, God reminded me that He responds to my calling just as the gobbler does. There are many passages of scripture instructing us to call upon the Lord. Why? Because He answers. Romans 10:13 and Acts 2:21 Say to call upon the Name of the Lord and you will be saved. Just like that eager gobbler who sometimes doesn't even let you get through your yelping sequence before he interrupts with his thundering gobble. God is just as eager to rescue the sinner from their sins if we simple repent and call upon Him.

Field Tip: Have a number of different calls with you while your turkey hunting. Sometimes it is just a certain tone that will get a gobbler to repsond. There are also times the turkeys may be close or a hen came in first and you will want to eliminate movement which may require you to use a mouth call. You will also want to be well educated with the many calls and sounds turkey make. While a simple yelp may get them with 80 yards it may take some purrs or putts to bring them within range.

My favorite call to use is the mouth call but here is what I carry with me while turkey hunting:1. Slate call with two different stikers for different tones 2. 5 different mouth calls 3. The Knight and Hale Ultimate Fighting Purr Call (This is shown in the picture above and I have had great success with it in certain situations) 4. I also can make quiet purrs and runs with my mouth. There are many other options so find out what works best for you.
